What is a Whiplash Injury?

A whiplash accident injury can be very serious indeed. Whiplash is commonly thought of as neck pain following a severe jerk of the neck, but the reality is a whiplash injury can cause a great number of further symptoms from headaches to blurred vision and decreased mobility of the body.

A whiplash accident is caused when the neck is subjected to a severe backwards and forwards jerk. That is why it is very common in car accidents although it can also occur during contact sports or physical attack of some kind. The bones in the neck are misplaced suddenly which results in a pinching of the surrounding nerves. Although the neck pain of whiplash may not sound severe, the reality is it can last for many months, restrict mobility and eventually even bring about depression if chronic pain persists.

Unfortunately there is not a quick and easy answer to whiplash injury treatment. A neck brace can be worn and physiotherapy can be carried out, but it can be months or even years before the pain is gone altogether. Many who have suffered with neck pain whiplash in the past say their neck never returned to normal.

Other whiplash injury symptoms are headaches, blurred vision, tingling or numbness in other parts of the body, fatigue, muscle spasms, dizziness and even memory loss. Whiplash injury symptoms are not always forthcoming either. It can be several hours before the symptoms start to materialise following the accident. If you are involved in a whiplash accident of some kind, it is vital you seek medical attention immediately, even if the pain is negligible. Not only is the pain likely to increase over night but visiting a doctor is crucial if you are thinking of a future whiplash personal injury claim too. Not seeing a doctor immediately could harm your case drastically and is one of the most common mistakes made by claimants looking to be compensated fairly.

If you have been involved in an accident that wasn’t your fault, you could well be eligible for compensation if you sustained a whiplash injury or any other damage. Whiplash claims make up around 80% of all compensation claims in the UK (http://www.law.cf.ac.uk/research/pubs/repository/1445.pdf) and is a condition that is taken very seriously. Whiplash injuries can drastically effect the overall quality of life of a person and because of that it is only fair that monetary compensation be awarded to cover costs incurred and make up for any pain and suffering caused.
